Flight of the Butterflies is a lupus awareness campaign sharing stories of the brave lupus warriors. Many don’t understand lupus until they hear the walk of a warrior. Flight of the Butterflies is dedicated to sharing those stories in May for lupus awareness month.
Flight of the Butterflies Begins…..

My journey began in 1995 when my legs and hands became swollen and had a dark purple rash, known as petechia. After numerous tests and specialists, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus. After the swelling went away, I quickly forgot about the diagnosis. In May of 2012, I woke up and couldn’t move my right side or speak. I was never able to return to teaching. The wolf had come to stay. My central nervous system sustained the worst attack. I should have paid more attention to my slurring words, loss of feeling in my extremities, cluster migraines, and pain, because perhaps it would have saved my teaching career. Lupus is so deceitful and tricky. It pretends to hide, but in reality is destroying your body and lifestyle one cell at a time.
After 3 years, even more specialists and tests, medications that have caused cataracts, dental problems, weight gain, hair loss, and a loss of income, I decided to take control of my life again. I now spend my time trying to help others less fortunate than I am. I have found a new more relaxed lifestyle that focuses on my faith, my family, and my friends. It’s important to have good medical care, the love and understanding of at least one other person, and a daily goal.
Lupus In Color is excited to present Katy’s story to the world. As a Lupus Warrior she is actively promoting lupus awareness and wearing the armor of strength in doing so. Lupus In Color Salutes you Katy Canfield.
