Flight of the Butterflies, Butterflies of Hope Warrior Stories is a lupus awareness campaign sharing stories of the brave lupus warriors. Many don’t understand lupus until they hear the walk of a warrior. Flight of the Butterflies, Butterflies of Hope Warrior Stories is dedicated to sharing those stories in May for lupus awareness month.

Hello, my name is Michelle Harris & I am a 20 year Lupus Warrior. In 2001 life as I knew it drastically changed . I was diagnosed with SLE. I was suddenly becoming trapped inside a body I did not recognize & physically becoming someone my friends and family did not recognize. Being in the nursing profession was basically how I identified myself but now I was on the other side I was the reoccurring patient; with lupus dealing me every hand of hardship it could.
This journey has been tough. Lupus now currently affects my blood, joints,bones, lungs & heart. I’ve fortunately learned throughout the years to live life, educate myself, & trust God. It is through my faith in God that I have endured whatever medical explanations man may have because I know with God anything is possible. Although; there is no medical explanation of why I’m still here but I realize God still has a purpose for me in his plan.
In 2009 I decided to start WeCare Lupus Support Group as an outlet to encourage & support others. i was not prepared for the hand of cards I was about to be dealt with my daughter also being diagnosed with lupus. The feeling of selfworth I felt from helping other individuals was amazing & kept my mind off my problems. I was now a patient,caregiver & vigilant advocate of lupus. Instead of it making me bitter it made me better.
Today I look back approximately 15 plus surgeries & a host of different diagnosis later. I am thankful for my journey. It has made me the strong resilient individual that I am. To allow lupus to stop me is not an option so I look for detours around every obstacle & follow God’s direction to find my way to achieve my goals & fulfill my dreams.
