May 20- Lupus Fact

Lupus can cause lung damage, which can lead to respiratory failure.
Lupus can affect the lungs in a variety of ways, but the most common is through inflammation of the pleura, the lining that covers the outside of the lungs. This inflammation, known as pleuritis, can cause severe chest pain. The pain is often sharp and stabbing, and it is typically made worse by taking a deep breath, coughing, sneezing, or laughing. Shortness of breath may also occur. In some cases, fluid can build up in the space between the lungs and the chest wall, which can further worsen the pain and make it difficult to breathe. This condition is known as pleural effusion. Pleurisy and pleural effusion are found in 40 to 60 percent of people with lupus.
