What is Holistic Medicine, Holistic Care, and Naturopathy?
Holistic Medicine
The word “holistic” means “dealing with the whole of something”. To take a holistic approach means to treat the whole person not only physically, but mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
“Holistic” does not mean “anti-science”. The most common misconception about holistic medicine is that it’s a replacement for traditional medicine. Holistic medicine should work with traditional research-backed treatment methods, not against them or in place of them.
Holistic Care
Holistic care is a philosophy that encompasses a variety of treatment techniques. Holistic medicine is safe under the care and supervision of a board-certified medical doctor. In fact, holistic care focused on prevention and wellness has been shown to help patients manage their own health more effectively.
Many types of holistic medicine techniques are unlikely to cause harm, however, delaying treatment in an attempt to self medicate with these methods alone can be dangerous.
Naturopathy
Naturopathy blends modern science with traditional healing methods to promote self-healing, disease prevention, and personal health responsibility. This approach emphasizes education, dietary choices, exercise, and stress management, aiming to optimize overall well-being.
Naturopathy, in simple terms, is like taking care of your garden: you focus on giving your body the tools and environment it needs to thrive, instead of just fighting the weeds (diseases) that pop up.
For those seeking a holistic approach to health, naturopathy offers a compelling alternative. By harnessing the body’s innate healing potential, this practice focuses on preventing illness before it starts.
Holistic -vs- Naturopathy
Think of naturopathy as a specific toolbox filled with natural remedies to help your body heal itself. The title of a naturopathy could be Naturopathic doctors (NDs) or doctors of naturopathic medicine (NMDs). These terms are used when they have completed a four-year graduate program in accredited naturopathic medical schools and passed licensing exams.
Think of holistic medicine as a broader philosophy that considers all aspects of your life and uses various tools, including conventional medicine and natural therapies, to optimize your health.
There’s no single official title for “holistic doctors”: This is because holistic medicine isn’t a specific discipline with its own licensure. It’s a philosophy or approach that can be integrated by various healthcare professionals. Depending on their primary training and licensing, they could be called:MD or DO: Medical doctors (MDs) or doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) who practice a holistic approach.
