14th Annual Flight of the Butterflies- Butterflies of Hope Lupus Warrior Stories is a powerful celebration of strength, survival, and spirit. Through the eyes and hearts of lupus warriors, we share stories that often go unseen. Stories of pain, resilience, and triumph! These butterflies may have been battered by the storm, but they continue to rise, wings open, ready to soar.

I was diagnosed at age 9 after my mom noticed I was having trouble emptying the dishwasher – not long after that I became very ill, stopped eating and slept much of the day, missing a couple months of school. I had a lot of kidney damage that was managed through my childhood but unfortunately now I’m dealing with Chronic Kidney Disease (too common in lupus patients). I’m also at risk for strokes (have already had a couple by now, age of 50) but am blessed to have fabulous doctors.
I was lucky to get diagnosed within a few months because my mom recognized the signs of lupus activity because she herself deals with it as well.
I’m about to be married to a wonderful man who did his research and is willing to deal with the roller coaster of emotions, medications and treatments lupus can put me on.
I have had lupus for more than 75% of my life now and appreciate all the support groups out there who have helped me mature in my knowledge of lupus and have helped me continually add coping skills over the years as I didn’t understand it well as a child, being thrust into being more responsible than a child should need to be.
