Spread Lupus Awareness

Tell someone about lupus today!

Lupus is like an allergic reaction by the body. The immune system essentially sees the body’s own healthy tissues and cells as foreign and attacks them.

Lupus is not contagious. You cannot “catch” lupus from someone or “give” lupus to someone. It is not like or related to AIDS or Cancer.

Lupus is unpredictable: It is a disease of flares (the symptoms worsen and you feel ill) and quiescence (the symptoms quiet and improve and you feel better).

Spread the word about Lupus. Someone you know has lupus!

May 10 Lupus Fact

Imagine being bothered by sunlight, being covered in a rash, suffering fatigue, mouth sores, kidney and joint problems, as well as experiencing substantial hair loss and the swelling of lymph nodes.

Sounds awful, doesn’t it?

Today is World Lupus Day help us celebrate warriors and spread awareness. World Lupus Day was created to help all to understand that this seemingly random grab bag of symptoms is actually a life altering, debilitating, chronic autoimmune disease suffered by approximately 5 million people worldwide, with 1.5 million of them living in the United States alone.

In short, lupus causes the immune system to become overactive, creating antibodies that attack healthy tissue causing pain, inflammation and damage in any given part of the body. Unfortunately lupus can be fatal and there is currently no known cure.

Sadly, a large majority of people have little to no idea about lupus, often confusing it with other diseases since it mimics so many different illnesses. Many people have no idea lupus even exists until they themselves or somebody they know is diagnosed with it. This is the problem World Lupus Day was created to combat.

World Lupus Day was created by Lupus Canada in 2004 to raise awareness for lupus which can have devastating effects on lupus warriors and their families. It was organized by lupus organizations from thirteen countries, who called for their governments to increase funding for research, provide better patient services, increase epidemiological data and raise awareness.

Many people have no idea lupus even exists until they themselves or somebody they know is diagnosed with it. This is the problem World Lupus Day was created to combat.

World Lupus Day increases awareness of lupus and helps gather support for the more than 5 million people affected by this condition worldwide.

Lupus is a serious, life-altering autoimmune disease that can affect any organ of the body. Lupus is a disease which remains under-recognized and under-appreciated.

An autoimmune disease is one in which the immune system is unable to recognize the difference between healthy cells in the body and the foreign cells it fights to remove. A healthy immune system produces antibodies which attack and destroy foreign and invasive cells like viruses, bacteria and germs.

However, in people with lupus, the immune system creates auto antibodies which destroys healthy tissue. The consequence of this can be widespread, causing damage, inflammation and pain throughout the body. Lupus is a potentially fatal disease. Most organs and other parts of the body can be affected, including the brain, heart, lungs, kidneys and skin.

To raise awareness of lupus around the globe, during the early 21st century, a World Lupus Day was set for the 10th of May each year. This date was set following agreement by representatives of lupus organizations from 13 different nations worldwide.
