THE 12TH ANNUAL FLIGHT OF THE BUTTERFLIES
Flight of the Butterflies is a lupus awareness campaign sharing stories of the brave lupus warriors. Many don’t understand lupus until they hear the walk of a warrior. Flight of the Butterflies is dedicated to sharing those Butterfly of Hope stories in May for lupus awareness month.
Butterfly Flight Keisha Linton
My name is Keisha and I was diagnosed with lupus in September 2013. I am 31 years old from a small island called Barbados. I was limited greatly by this chronic illness but the hardest part about having lupus for me was having to give up my dream on becoming a baker and owning my own pastry shop.
However, this journey has taught me how to be strong. One day I would wake up feeling good enough to complete an entire list of errands and chores or even go outside; and the next day, I am not even able to get out of my bed.
My advice to newly diagnosed lupus warriors is to stand firm, do not give up and keep pushing. Giving up is not an option. When you’re chronically ill, every day is a struggle and you have to fight; “every sunrise seen is another day gain.” Even if you don’t realize it now, you are also getting stronger every time you fight. Most people wouldn’t be able to handle a fraction of all that you have gone through just to survive. Some days when you feel like you spent the whole day being sick and wasn’t able to accomplish much; just know that getting through the day was a HUGE accomplishment on its own. Know that you are strong, matter a fact EXCEPTIONALLY STRONG and you will get through this.
My strength comes from keeping my faith in God; without Him I wouldn’t be where I am today to share my story to support others.
Warm regards, From One Warrior to the Next
