Living with Lupus: A Journey of Resilience
In 2017, at the age of 29, my life took an unexpected turn when I was diagnosed with Mixed Connective Tissue Disease (MCD), a complex condition encompassing multiple autoimmune disorders. It began with subtle signs—a swelling in the joints of my fingers. Initially dismissed as tendinitis by urgent care, little did I know this was the prelude to a life-altering journey.
Amidst the turmoil of planning a move to Ft. Carson, Colorado, the stress seemed insurmountable. This transition would inadvertently awaken a dormant condition lurking within me. Settling into Colorado, my body began to take a turn for the worse, inflammation in my joints made even the simplest tasks excruciating.
Seeking answers, I expressed my concerns to healthcare professionals. Blood work revealed the staggering truth: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Raynaud’s disease, and Sjorgen’s Syndrome—a constellation of autoimmune disorders converging within me.
In the face of this daunting diagnosis, it felt as though my life had reached an impasse. Yet, I soon realized that the journey was far from over. Armed with determination and a thirst for knowledge, I delved into understanding my body like never before. Research became my ally, guiding me through the different types of treatments and lifestyle adjustments necessitated by this newfound reality.
Living with Lupus became a lesson in self-awareness and resilience. Every day brought new challenges, demanding a meticulous balance of diet, exercise, and self-care. I learned to listen to my body’s whispers, advocating for myself through regular blood work and probing questions.
But perhaps the most crucial lesson of all was the importance of grace. Lupus may have altered the course of my life, but it did not define me. With each passing day, I discovered the strength within myself to keep fighting, to defy the odds, and to reclaim agency over my health and happiness.
