Lupus can cause a phenomenon known as Raynaud’s (ray-NOSE) syndrome. This disease restricts blood flow to the extremities, most notably the fingers and the toes. But it also can affect other areas of the body, such as nose, lips, ears and even nipples. When blood flow is reduced to these parts of the body, they can become extremely cold and discolored. Fingers and toes might appear bluish or purplish in color, or they can completely lose color and become completely white. They’ll also have a numbing sensation. This is the result of a lack of oxygenated blood flowing to these parts of the body. When blood rushes back to them, they can become intensely hot, and they can tingle and throb.
